The Beginning of Forever

A garden, golden light, and two people who forgot the camera was there.

Some evenings arrive already golden. The light leans low across the grass, the music softens, and everyone dressed for celebration begins, slowly, to forget they are dressed at all.

She wore pink like a declaration. He kept his collar open and his sunglasses on long past their usefulness. They stood together the way people do when standing together has become easy — no direction needed, no pose to hold.

Under the marquee the afternoon loosened. Drinks sweated in glass jugs, chairs turned toward laughter, and the garden held everyone a little longer than anyone had planned. This is what celebration looks like when nobody is performing it.
